The Seafood Collective is thrilled to announce the grand celebration of Fish and Chip Month 2023, from October 30th to November 30th. As the pioneers of exquisite seafood dining, we are all set to make this year’s celebration unforgettable for seafood enthusiasts.

Fish and Chip Month is that time of the year when we dive into the flavour of the sea and savour our crispy and succulent fish and chips that have won the hearts of seafood lovers far and wide. Our Fish and Chip Month celebrations is comprised of fun, educational social media posts, learning more about our seafood species, our company, and our people. We cannot forget a promotion in-store can’t we? So read through to learn more about that as well!

Our Species:

We are a proud provider of fresh fish and chips in our local communities around Auckland and Papamoa. Established in 2018. The Seafood Collective has been focused on bringing you the freshest fish fillets that are available all year round. Among the plethora of fish species in New Zealand, we have standardised our operations base on these three NZ fish species:

  

Our “Market Fish”:

We are committed to serving up the freshest seafood in Aotearoa. Therefore, we are not able to keep our stock for too long. Our fish need to move fast in order to uphold our values. “Market Fish” is our term for Fish of the Day, where the move our species that has been replaced by a new stock to. So the next you order our Market Fish and Chips, don’t hesitate to ask what species of fish is it! You can be as lucky as getting snapper as Market Fish or even our special species like Kingfish, Trevally, or Yellow Tail.

Fish and Chip Buying Hack!:

  1. When ordering fish and chips at The Seafood Collective, make sure to ask what is the market fish of the day.
  2. Get them crumbed (costs $0!). Once you go crumbed you will never go back.
  3. Pick you own fish fillet! Bored of the standard fish species? Explore our wide range of species in the fish cabinet and get them cooked for only $5 per fillet.
  4. Switch up your chips with out specialty range: Curly fries/ Shoestring/ Kumara/ Wedges.
  5. Ask for more seasoning on the chips! Who doesn’t like this? Extra seasoning on chips are always free of charge!

Fish and Chip Month Special Recipe:

Smoked/ Fresh NZ Mussel Mentai

Ingredients:

Mentai is a creamy and spicy Japanese sauce made from spicy cod or pollock roe. Combining this delicious sauce with smoked mussels creates a unique and flavourful dish.

Ingredients:

Protein:

  • 300 grams smoked mussels
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mentai sauce:

  • 50 grams spicy cod or pollock roe (mentaiko) – can be found at Japanese supermarkets in NZ
  • 100 ml Japanese mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha sauce (adjust for desired spiciness)
  • 1 tablespoon sake
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce

Garnish (Optional):

  • Chopped fresh spring onion
  • Sesame seeds

How to cook:

  1. Prepare the Smoked Mussels:
    • If your smoked mussels are whole, chop them into bite-sized pieces.
    • In a non-stick pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
    • Add the smoked mussels to the pan and sauté for about 2-3 minutes, or until they are heated through.
    • Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, then remove from heat.
  2. Prepare the Mentai Sauce:
    • In a small mixing bowl, combine the spicy cod or pollock roe (mentaiko), Japanese mayonnaise, sriracha sauce, sake, mirin, and soy sauce.
    • Mix all the ingredients until well combined. Taste the sauce and adjust the spiciness by adding more sriracha if needed.
  3. Assemble the Dish:
    • Place the hot, sautéed smoked mussels on a serving platter or individual plates.
  4. Drizzle with Mentai Sauce:
    • Spoon the prepared Mentai sauce generously over the smoked mussels.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Sprinkle chopped fresh spring onion over the dish
    • You can add a sprinkle of sesame seeds for extra texture and flavour.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Smoked Mussel Mentai as an appetiser or as part of a larger Japanese meal. It can be served with rice or enjoyed on its own.
